Nearly 4000 New Zealand troops and sailors took part in the Korean War. Prior to the arrival of the ground troops the first New Zealand Naval forces arrived on Augustus 1950. Through 4 naval vessels, the New Zealand sailors performed such duties as shore raids and inland bombardment. On April 1951 the 16 Field Regiment took part in the battle of KAPYONG with other UN troops halting a Chinese advance.
